Cosmetology State-Board Class

Experience

Sarah Cooke has been doing hair since she was able to stand behind the chair and make art using hair design. She started having an interest in hair design by 5 years old. Her parents decided she needed her first little tykes hair styling vanity. She shaved every Barbie in her collection and gave all her trolls a flat top. By the time she was in middle school she had set her sights on all of her friends. She spent every dance and dressy occasion getting her friends ready. In highschool her interest in hair really peaked. She started doing color and highlights in her freshman year and cutting and coloring every person that asked of her by sophomore year.

Cosmetology at Tazewell County Career and Technical Center called her name and she joined Mr. Lonnie Quesenberry's class. Typically 1st year students practice class in the morning, however with her skills already present, she was soon moved to the evening class with the more advanced students. She became an active member in SkillsUSA where she became the PM TCCTC President and the President of SkillsUSA District 8. In Sarah's senior year she began competitions in hair contests through SkillsUSA. After winning her district and state contest she went on to represent the state of Virginia in the SkillsUSA National Contest in Kansas City, Kansas. She placed 5th in the Nation in cosmetology in 2007.

After graduating top of her class in cosmetology, Sarah continued her internship she had started a year before with her Instructor. She worked in a salon doing booth rent for a couple years. She explored several different hair career paths including being a chain-salon stylist, a judge at every SkillsUSA state cosmetology contest and a salon assistant manager until she decided to start her own salon in 2011. She opened the doors to Rock Paper Scissors in Tazewell in August and soon had several busy stylists working for her in her very successful salon, her former instructor being one of them.  Sarah decided after 4 years that it was time to expand and grow her business. She opened a bigger salon next door to her small salon. She grew to double the number of stylists.

After a couple years, and long and many hours behind the chair, she became bored of the busy stylist life. She found the need and want to educate young stylists struggling through their early career. When the opportunity presented itself she applied to the Tazewell County Career and Technical Center to become a Cosmetology Instructor. After a rigorous interview process she was given the chance to teach in the same classroom she started in. She now strives to inspire the students who are in the same shoes she was once in.
